This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the film being covered here wouldn’t exist.
Rebekah McKendry, the director of the glory hole horror movie Glorious, is back with another film, and this one involves an elevator rather than a stall in a men’s public restroom.
The movie, Elevator Game, follows a bunch of teenagers who decide to video tape themselves playing the titular game, where they go to a combination of floors in a certain elevator, making sure not to open their eyes or mouth when they hit the fifth floor. They break the rules, and the not-so-nice-looking “Fifth Floor Woman” is now haunting/murdering them, with bloody results.
Here’s the film’s official synopsis:
Based on the online phenomenon of the same name, Elevator Game follows socially awkward teenager Ryan, who ingratiates himself into a group of recent high school graduates that run an online web series debunking urban legends. But Ryan has a secret: His sister disappeared months earlier, and he believes they–and a dangerous online challenge called “The Elevator Game”– were responsible. To play the game, you must ride the elevator in a specific sequence, invoking a supernatural creature called “The Fifth Floor Woman.” In an attempt to gain more information as to the whereabouts of his sister, Ryan persuades the group to play the game once more, and risk unleashing the most fearsome consequences imaginable.
Good stuff! And if you’re looking for more Elevator Game goodness, also check out the season two episode of Evil with the same title.
The Elevator Game movie stars Gino Anania, Verity Marks, Alec Carlos, Nazariy Demkowicz, Madison MacIsaac, Liam Stewart-Kanigan, and Megan Best, and was written by Travis Seppala (Captive).
It starts streaming on Shudder on September 15, 2023. Here’s a poster for you to enjoy in the meantime:
